    Making of CGI for Syd Mead’s Chinatown : Part 1

    A complete CGI recreation of Syd Mead’s production sketch of Chinatown that was never recreated in the film! This is part 1 of the making.

    In last article, I identified the outdoor studio in Warner Bros. studio that Syd Mead used as the basis for his sketche of Chinatown.

    I verified that this location is indeed the original location of Mead’s sketch. Specifically, I placed the building objects in Blender based on the Google map and checked if the rendered CGI would have the same composition as Mead’s sketch.

    I adjusted the camera position to be the same as Mead’s sketch and rendered it.

    If you compare the rendered CGI with Mead’s sketch, you can see that they have the exact same composition. This is definitely the original location of Mead’s Chinatown!
    I will use this Google map as the basis for creating the CGI.
