“CE3K – Ultimate Long Edition”, edited by Mr. Shu, brings me the crazy experience of new interpretations and insights I have ever have!

I’ve finally watched “Close Encounters of the third kind – Ultimate Long Edition”. it came out in 2018 by Mr. Shu who is famous for the editor of “Blade Runner – Ultimate Work Print”.

Blu-ray “CE3K – Ultimate Long Edition”

The running time is the longest in the world at 2 hours 43 minutes, including the three versions of the film that have already been released and rejected scenes. Compared to the longest version ever released, “CE3K Special Edition” (2 hours 12 minutes), you can see how many scenes have been added to the film.

Now, I’m going to write about three things that I felt after watching this film in my own way. (Spoiler alert)

  1. Roy’s reactions are now more convincing.
While the original version focused just on Roy’s unusual behavior after witnessing the UFO, in this version, it is added the reactions of other people to the UFO sighting after their witnesses it. For example, a police officer who writes a false report because he is worried about his boss’s reaction, or a co-worker who cares about Roy so as not to cause trouble.
In the original version, Roy’s unusual behavior could be seen as unrealistic, but in this version, the other people’s reactions makes Roy’s unusual behavior more realistic by adding the reason why Roy’s actions is just one of the many reactions of people who witnessed the UFO.
  2. The world view has been expanded.
In this version, it was added a scene in which the U.S. government performs a cover-up procedure on passengers of an aircraft that encounters a UFO. in the original version, it focused on the two stories of Dr. Lacome and Roy, and you didn’t see much of the outside world of theirs. However, I felt that the inclusion of this scene greatly expanded the worldview.
  3. It turned into feel emotions with the communication with the aliens by light and sound.
A scene where Dr.Lacome gives a lecture about verbal communication has been added in this version. In this scene he states, “We must communicate not only the meaning of the words, but also the emotions contained in them”.
With the inclusion of this line, you can feel the emotions in the communication with the aliens by light and sound. Also, I think the fact that the communication through sign language ended with a smile made it more convincing.

It was a great experience to see a cut that I hadn’t seen before, tightly integrated into the film, which allowed for new interpretations and insights.
My sincere respect for Mr, Shu’s hard work and passion.

P.S.
